Bruins Go Edgy, Unveil Black Jerseys

The excellent blog Icethetics, with Hubhockey as its source, breaks news this morning that the Bruins have unveiled a new alt-jersey for the upcoming season. Seeing as how 3rd jerseys are intended to recreate a team's image, making it more contemporary and stylish, the Bruins have decided to go with an innovative look:

Gold on black.

Yes, this is a major departure from the established color scheme. I'll give you a second to catch your breath.

Basically what makes this look different from what the Bruins wore in the early 1990s is the lack of striping ("piping" to fashion-industry insiders) along the tail and shoulders. And, um, a slightly different combination of logos. And... yeah, that's about it.

I can't say I dislike the design, especially if it will (mercifully) only be used a few times this season. But I doubt many fans will be inspired to rush out and spend $300 on it, and I certainly don't think it's going to have a very long lifespan considering it's nearly indistinguishable from the standard home jersey if you're sitting in the nosebleeds.

But it beats the hell out of Winnie the Pooh.

According to Fluto, the team is planning on wearing the alt uni 15-17 times throughout the season. While not overly enamoured by the new design, it most certainly is an improvement over that monstrosity we previously had. Besides, given their color scheme I am not sure what other way they could really go with their alt uni...

I've seen some of the concept art for the jersey design and while the one Looch was wearing last night seems fairly bland, when you see the whole thing with the new fonts they'll be using for the names and numbers it seems flashier than it does blank.

Still not as exciting as some might have wished, but indeed, after the pooh-bears, understated is likely a better choice. You pretty much can't get away with making the jerseys all yellow, especially in today's HD world, as that just looks plain bad I think. I was sorta hoping they'd introduce something with some gray in it as the primary color though, would make the bruins logos punch out pretty nicely.

Someone over at Icethetics suggested they go REALLY old-school and use brown as the primary color. I think that could have looked good if done correctly -- not too many teams use brown and it has a classy Eddie Shore appeal. Oh well... I guess that's why I'm not a fashion designer.

15-17 times is a damn lot -- almost a quarter of the games! That's entirely too often for a 3rd jersey unless it's had a couple of seasons to build interest.

I like the brown idea a lot.
But, I am also not at all disappointed in this design. Although, I saw someone suggest taking the spoked B off of the shoulder and I had to agree. It would in my opinion make it look a little more old school, which I think the alt should be all about. Celebrating the history, eh ;)
